Permanent Electors Registry
To be added to the Town of Smoky Lake Permanent Electors Registry, please access VoterLink or contact the Returning Officer.
AT THE POLLING STATION
If you are already named on the Permanent Electors Register, you must provide one piece of Government-issued photo ID, including your full name, current address, and photo.
*Please note that another elector can no longer vouch for your identity, you must be able to produce an acceptable form of identification.
If you are not already named on the Permanent Electors Registry, you must:
- Make a statement confirming your eligibility to vote, in the prescribed form; and
- Validate your identity and address of your residence by producing one (1) of the following:
- one piece of Government-issued photo ID, including your full name, current address, and photo;
- one piece of identification authorized under the Election Act (s. 100(2)(b)) that establishes your name and current address of residence.
A more detailed list of these authorized identifications will be provided closer to Election Day.
For identification that only contains a mailing address (i.e. PO Box):
- If you registered to vote at your current physical address, you do not need to provide additional identification and can use your Driver’s License or Identification Card which contains your current mailing address.
- If you are not registered to vote, or need to register at a new physical address and your drivers license or motor vehicle operator’s license is issued by the Government of Alberta, you do not need to provide additional identification.
- If you are not registered to vote or need to register at a new physical address and do not have a drivers license or motor vehicle operator’s license is issued by the Government of Alberta, you will need additional identification to prove your physical address (i.e. legal land description, lot-block-plan, and/or 911 address) prior to voting.
Vouching
- Another Elector is only permitted to vouch for someone's address, not their identity.
- An Elector who has been vouched for cannot vouch for another
SPECIAL BALLOTS
Special Ballots are available to those whose name is contained in the permanent electors register, who are unable to vote at the Advance Vote dates or the voting station on Election Day.
Applications for Special Ballot packages open September 25, 2025
The elector choosing to vote by Special Ballot must make the request. The request cannot be made by another individual on the elector's behalf.
The Special Ballot package will be mailed to the elector or the Returning Officer will hold it for pick-up by the elector upon request. An elector may also have the package picked up by a commercial courier, friend or family member, provided they notify the Returning Officer; the Returning Officer will not release the special ballot package to someone not expressly authorized to pick it up by the elector.
The person picking up the Special Ballot package will be asked by the Returning Officer to provide identification. If sent by mail, and you do not receive your special ballot package within 1 week, please follow-up with the Returning Officer.
If the elector makes the request in person at the Returning Officer's office, after October 6, 2025, the Special Ballot may be completed at the same time.
How do I receive a Special Ballot?
You can request a Special Ballot by completing the Request for Special Ballot Package Form and submitting it to the Returning Officer:

The form can be filled out online and either emailed or printed, or printed as a blank form and filled out by hand.
A special ballot package can also be requested by phone (780-656-3674) only if the elector is on the Permanent Electors Register, and able to pick up the package in person, where they would be required to provide identification verifying their identity.
Completing and Returning the Special Ballot Package
- Step-by-step instructions to complete the Special Ballot process and seal your vote properly, are included in the special ballot package. The elector must complete and sign Part 1 of the Special Ballot Certificate Envelope and must provide a copy of authorized identification and properly seal the special ballot package for return.
- It is up to the elector to return the completed special ballot package to the Returning Officer at the Town Office before the deadline, which is 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 (Election Day). The elector may return the package by mail, courier or by any other means.
- The special ballot package cannot be sent to the elector, norreturned to the Returning Officer, by facsimile or other electronic means.
Special Ballot packages that are incorrect or incomplete, or received AFTER 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 (Election Day), will NOT be counted as per Bylaw No. 15-2025 Election Procedures and Section 77.3 of the Municipal Government Act.
The Returning Officer is not responsible for the collection of completed Special Ballot packages.
